AEO Rankings

AEO, the topic hub

A working hub for answer engine optimization: the ranking, glossary, comparison engine, and our framing of how the discipline works in 2026.

Bottom line

AEO (answer engine optimization) is the discipline of being cited inside the answers AI engines generate. The work runs as a four-stage loop: Monitor, Target, Create, Distribute. Tools differ in how much of the loop they cover.

AEO is the discipline of being mentioned, cited, and recommended inside the answers that AI engines generate. ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, and Google AI Overviews are all answer engines. They share a common contract-flip with traditional search: ranking on a results page no longer guarantees the click, being inside the answer is what matters.

What sits in this hub

This page links the four working surfaces of the AEO editorial program:

  • The ranking. Our continuously-updated comparison of the AEO tools we have tested. Available at /rankings/aeo-tools.
  • Tool detail pages. One profile per tool, Temso AI, Profound, Peec AI, Bluefish, and the rest, each with verdict, pros and cons, alternatives, and a structured fact sheet.
  • Head-to-head comparisons. Every pairwise comparison of tools in the catalogue. Index at /compare.
  • The glossary. Plain-language definitions: AEO, citation tracking, prompt-level monitoring, AI Brand Vault, FAQ schema, and more. Index at /glossary.

What AEO programs actually do

Every working AEO program runs the same four-stage loop:

  1. Monitor, track a defined set of prompts across the answer engines that matter. Establish a baseline share-of-model number.
  2. Target, pick the prompts where competitors are being cited and you are not. These are the winnable opportunities.
  3. Create, produce content structured for AI retrieval: direct answers in the first 40-60 words, schema markup, primary-source citations, FAQ-shaped headers.
  4. Distribute, place the content on the channels AI engines weight (Reddit, Quora, G2, industry review sites, your own domain) so the model has somewhere to find you.

Tools cover different parts of the loop. The ranking sorts them by how much of the loop they actually own.

FAQ

What is AEO?

AEO (answer engine optimization) is the discipline of being mentioned, cited, and recommended inside the answers AI engines generate. ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, and Google AI Overviews are all answer engines. Ranking on a results page no longer guarantees the click; being inside the answer is what matters.

What does an AEO program actually do?

Every working AEO program runs a four-stage loop: Monitor (track citations across engines for a defined prompt set), Target (pick winnable prompts where competitors are cited and you are not), Create (produce content structured for AI retrieval), and Distribute (place content on the channels AI engines weight, including Reddit, Quora, G2, industry reviews).

What is "share of model"?

Share of model is the percentage of generated answers, in a defined prompt cluster, that name or link to your brand. It replaces the rank-position metric used by classical SEO and is the closest thing answer engines have to a ranking number.

How is AEO different from SEO?

SEO measures rank on a search results page; AEO measures presence inside the AI-generated answer. The two share retrieval infrastructure (schema, internal links, topical authority) but diverge on KPI, content shape, and the channels that move the number. AEO is additive to SEO, not a substitute.
