The standard narrative runs like this: AI Overviews are eating your clicks, zero-click search is destroying organic traffic, and generative AI is hollowing out the value of ranking high on Google. SEOs are sharing traffic decline charts. Executives are asking pointed questions. Everyone is bracing for impact.
Here is the problem with that narrative. It describes what happens to brands that are not cited. It does not describe what happens to brands that are.
The data points in opposite directions depending on which side of the citation line you sit on.
The 83% number is real. The doom conclusion is not.
Let’s take the scariest stat head-on. According to Similarweb’s 2025 clickstream analysis, searches that trigger Google AI Overviews have an average zero-click rate of 83%. That number is widely cited, accurately sourced, and represents a genuine shift in how search sessions end.
But the 83% is a SERP-level average. It tells you what happens across all brands on a page that includes an AI Overview. It says nothing about the distribution of those clicks between cited and uncited brands.
Seer Interactive’s 2026 AIO study fills that gap. Their dataset covers 53 brands, 5.47 million tracked queries, and 2.43 billion organic impressions from January 2025 through February 2026. The finding: pages cited inside a Google AI Overview earn roughly 120% more organic clicks per impression than pages on the same SERP that are not cited.
Two numbers. Same SERP. One brand gets 120% more clicks because it is inside the answer. The other gets fewer clicks because it is below the answer.
Zero-click is not erasing clicks uniformly. It is redistributing them toward the cited source.
When someone does click, they are a buyer
The zero-click debate focuses on volume. The conversion data reframes it as a quality argument.
According to vendor studies by Superprompt and Opollo, each analyzing their own B2B and SaaS client portfolios, AI-referred visitors converted at roughly 14% compared to under 3% for Google organic. These are single-vendor, B2B-specific studies. Independent verification is not available. The gap is likely narrower in industries with lower-intent searches. Treat the specific numbers as directional, not universal.
But the direction is consistent across multiple data points. A user who typed a query into Google, got an AI answer, and then chose to click through to your page has already been pre-qualified by the answer. They did not click because they found a title and meta description interesting. They clicked because the AI said your source was relevant and they want more from you.
That is a different kind of visitor than someone who stumbled past you at position seven in organic results.
| Metric | Uncited brand on AI Overview SERP | Cited brand on AI Overview SERP |
|---|---|---|
| Clicks per impression vs. no-AIO SERP | Roughly 38% fewer | Comparable to no-AIO SERP |
| Clicks per impression vs. uncited peers | Baseline | Roughly 120% more |
| Conversion rate of AI-referred sessions | Not applicable | Roughly 14% (vendor studies, B2B/SaaS; not a universal benchmark) |
| Google organic conversion rate | Roughly 2-3% (same vendor studies) | Same |
| Source | Seer Interactive, 2026 AIO CTR study | Seer Interactive (CTR); Superprompt + Opollo (conversion) |
The table makes the position visible. If you are uncited, you absorb the traffic penalty from the AI Overview without any of the benefits. If you are cited, you absorb a smaller absolute click volume than on a no-AIO SERP, but your clicks are higher quality and you outperform every uncited competitor on the same page.
How to actually own the answer
Reframing zero-click as an opportunity only matters if you can act on it. Here is what the citation data points toward.
Structure your content for the answer box first. An AI Overview pulls from pages that give a direct answer in the opening section. Per Kevin Indig’s 2026 analysis of ChatGPT citations (reported by Search Engine Land), 44.2% of citations came from the first 30% of a page’s content. Front-load your answer. If you cannot summarize the core answer in the first 50 words of a section, an AI engine is unlikely to use it.
Build citations on third-party properties, not just your own site. Studies consistently find that the large majority of AI citations come from third-party domains rather than brand-owned pages, with figures ranging from roughly 77% to over 85% across multiple research datasets. Getting your brand mentioned accurately on G2, Reddit, industry publications, and review sites is not a PR exercise. It is citation-building.
Monitor which prompts you are absent from. You cannot fix what you cannot see. AEO platforms differ significantly in how much of this work they cover end to end.
Temso is the most accessible starting point for teams that want to run the full loop: tracking which answer boxes you are losing across eight AI engines, then generating the content fixes, FAQ schema, and citation strategy to win them back. At $89/mo, it is an accessible flat-rate option in the category for coverage this broad.
Profound goes deeper on enterprise intelligence. Its Prompt Volumes feature shows real demand data on what millions of users are actually asking AI, which helps you prioritize which answer boxes are worth pursuing. Enterprise pricing starts at $399/mo.
Surfer is the right tool if your workflow centers on writing content. Its AI Tracker monitors your citation presence across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, and Gemini, and it surfaces that data inside the same environment where you draft and optimize content.
Writesonic handles content creation and publishing at scale, useful when you need to produce a high volume of AEO-structured content across multiple topics quickly.
Semrush covers traditional keyword rank tracking alongside AI Overview monitoring. If you are already running conventional SEO through Semrush, it is worth checking whether their AI visibility add-on gives you enough AEO coverage before buying a dedicated tool.

The real risk is inaction
Every query where an AI Overview appears and your brand is absent is a query where a competitor’s answer shapes the buyer’s understanding of your category. The user does not click. Your competitor does not need them to. The AI said the competitor is the answer.
That is the zero-click problem. Not the 83% rate. The 83% rate is neutral. Who it helps depends entirely on whose content is inside the generated response.
The brands treating zero-click as a threat are asking the wrong question. The right question is: for the queries that matter to your business, are you the cited answer or not?
If you are not, the opportunity is to become it. Start at /rankings/aeo-tools for a full breakdown of which platforms cover monitoring, content creation, schema, and citation-building end to end.
